Colter paused as he opened the door to his room, sensing her presence before he stepped through the opening. He shut the door behind him as Miranda flipped the switch across the room just inside the door that opened onto the upper verandah.

“You’re unexpectedly trusting … considering your line of work.”

He shrugged. “I didn’t leave anything here that I don’t want found.”

She turned and walked out to the verandah and he followed, leaned against the railing and faced out over the lawn, as she’d done. Then he waited.

Her silence lasted longer than he anticipated but he had patience enough for longer than that.

“You don’t figure things out as you go.”

He lifted a brow, impressed yet again. “No?”

“No. You walk in with a plan and you execute it very precisely.” She turned to face him, putting her back to the rail and crossing her arms in front of her. “So, what is it? What’s your plan?”

He tried to ignore what his body was telling him about how she looked in the moonlight, her breasts framed by the arms she had crossed at her waist. Even worse was that his mind was urging him to defend and protect. He didn’t mind when the urge was in regard to two nine-year-old boys. He didn’t need to have that mindset regarding a woman. Even more so, not this woman. At the moment, she needed about as much protection as a mountain lion. But still, that was what he felt.

“I need to place one of my team with the working side of the ranch.”

“In with the hands…”

He nodded.

“I’ll let Riley know.”

“It needs to be more … organic … than that.”

Her look was dubious. “Organic?”

“As in not planned.”

“Even though it’s planned?” At his nod, a frown creased her forehead. “So, Riley needs to make up some story for the rest of the guys.”

“Not exactly.”

He saw when understanding dawned right along with fury. “You want me to lie to Riley? What the hell?” She pushed away from the railing and he watched without saying anything more as she walked the length of the verandah then spun to walk back, stopping in front of him. “I trust Riley, I don’t care whether you do or not.”

“I don’t trust much of anyone, at this point, but I don’t distrust Riley.”

“Then why the deceit?”

“Look, it’s hard for people who aren’t used to keeping secrets to remember to keep them. I gather Riley is a straightforward kind of guy. Subterfuge is never going to be his strong point.”

She took a deep breath and released it. “I agree with that.”

“A slip of the tongue around the wrong person can mean the difference between life and death for Cheney,” he added, pressing his point. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be telling you if you didn’t have a part to play in getting her on board.”

She seemed to take less offense to that than to what she saw as an aspersion toward Riley but her brow lifted as she honed in on one aspect of his comment.
